Day 15 · Q4 recovery plan
Purity anxiety is the category — NMR story must be legible, not laboratory
Prepared by Forward-Deployed Research · Wellness & staples
Mixed-methods work with 498 households and pharmacist intercepts showed that post-scandal honey category recovery is not won by price. Shoppers encode purity as test certification they can repeat in conversation — ‘NMR tested’ fails if it does not map to a simple kirana explanation. Dabur’s technical truth was correct; the communication chain to the buyer was broken.
Legibility gap
62% of aware shoppers could not explain what NMR meant in their own words after TV exposure.
Fix
Kirana-ready purity story + pharmacist co-education — not another celebrity spot.
Recovery
₹18Cr Q4 run-rate restoration modelled from trust index shift + distribution repair.
Graded confidence: High on communication diagnosis; medium-high on recovery magnitude.
498 interviews · 40 pharmacist depth · trust index wave 1–3
Analyst triangulation linked verbatim purity metaphors (‘clean flame’, ‘no sugar syrup’) to POS materials that passed the ‘explain to neighbour’ test — the client’s internal bar for scaling beyond top metros.
Challenge
After viral social posts on honey adulteration, Dabur Honey saw urban modern-trade velocity drop 14% quarter-on-quarter — despite existing purity claims. Loose honey and regional jar brands gained in kirana and quick-commerce.
Insight
₹18 crore Q4 gap
Marketing wanted a celebrity reassurance campaign. Regulatory affairs pushed NMR and FSSAI narrative. Product needed to know which proof points moved belief — fast.
Post-scandal categories punish brands that speak laboratory language to kirana buyers. Dabur’s technical truth on NMR was accurate; the category’s emotional truth was fear of syrup adulteration in everyday speech. The engagement was scoped to repair the communication chain while competitors still weaponised doubt — speed mattered, but not at the expense of legibility tests in field.
Pharmacist intercepts were controversial internally (‘we are FMCG, not pharma’), yet they surfaced how purity claims get verified in practice when shoppers ask a trusted third party. Ignoring that channel would have left a hole in the triangulation the board’s scientific advisors would poke immediately.
Brand context
Dabur Honey sits in a portfolio anchored by Ayurveda trust — Chyawanprash and Hajmola give parent-brand credibility competitors lack. Packaged honey competes with loose commodity perception and “farm direct” regional startups.

Approach
Bundl ran adaptive interviews in Hindi, English, Bengali, and Kannada with probes on adulteration anxiety, purchase location, and proof believability. ZMET sessions with 48 heavy users surfaced purity metaphors before pack conjoint.
Segmented deniers, anxious switchers, and loyalists who needed reinforcement not discount.
Interviews probed ‘explain to your neighbour’ ability before and after stimulus exposure — a simple legibility bar corporate science decks skip. Adaptive calls in Hindi and English caught code-switching on purity metaphors regional TV missed.
Trust index waves were spaced to match actual distribution repair timelines, not calendar convenience, so movement in belief could be tied to actions the client took rather than seasonal category lift.

Pack concepts
Shelf conjoint in 18 stores tested NMR badge size, amber glass vs PET, and neck-band prominence at ₹195–₹425 MRP fences for 500g.
Metro-heavy first waves intentionally over-represented aware-but-confused households — the segment that drags recovery if left untapped. Kirana depth followed once POS materials existed in legible form; measuring findability before fixing shelf talk would have misattributed failure.
Pharmacist depth interviews were short but high leverage; we coded them separately from household transcripts so ‘white coat trust’ did not get averaged away into generic health claims.

The reusable insight: certification only works when it compresses into kirana-repeatable language. Clients should budget for translation layers, not just ad production — especially in categories where scandal raised the burden of proof permanently.
Q4 recovery magnitude stayed medium-high because competitor counter-claims and raw honey fads continued during field. We documented scenario bounds rather than a single hero number so finance could model downside without discrediting the research.

Synthesis
Dabur’s path was credible lab proof plus visceral pack honesty — not celebrity alone. Ayurveda parent trust amplified NMR when copy linked to export standards.
